Working from home can be a great experience. Convenience, comfort, and a distraction-free space are some of the great benefits a home
When working from home, it’s easy to just role out of your bed, pajamas and all, and get to work. But groggily logging onto a computer isn’t the best way to do it. Rather, take some time to give yourself a normal morning routine like your corporate counterparts. Showering, making a pot of coffee, watching the news, and then settling down to get some work done is a great way to make sure you’re awake and aware from the moment you start working.
Even though it may be easy to take your laptop to the couch and set up shop there, it’s important to give yourself a space with the sole purpose of work. Similar to how having your cellphone in your bedroom can hurt your sleep cycle, doing your work where the rest of your life takes place can make you subconsciously feel the need to work, even when you’re spending time with family.
One of the most dangerous things about working from home is the potential to overwork, decreasing short term and long-term productivity. Without coworkers reminding you when your eight hours are up, it’s important to set a timer for yourself so that you work a reasonable amount every day. Don’t let yourself get trapped by the never-ending stream of emails and phone calls. Set professional boundaries so that your home feels like a home. Not a work prison.
Even though you’re at home, you’re still at work. It’s important to put up boundaries with family and friends so that you aren’t being distracted by them during work time. Something as simple as informing your family of your work schedule can stop those midday calls asking for you to pick something up from the store and allow you to work more efficiently.
Just because you work at home doesn’t mean you always have to stay there. Try setting up shop at your local coffee place or library for a few hours, just to give yourself a change of pace. The new environment can help you see things in a new perspective and add a much-needed refresher to a long day of work.
